1. History of The Huc Bridge
The Huc Bridge was built in 1865 (at the same time as the Pen Tower), under the direction of scholar Nguyễn Văn Siêu. The bridge was constructed to connect the lakeside with Ngọc Sơn Temple, located on a small islet in Hoan Kiem Lake.

Throughout history, the bridge has undergone two major reconstructions. The first was in 1865 during the Thành Thái period. The second occurred on New Year’s Eve in 1952, when one span collapsed due to overcrowding. Afterward, the bridge was rebuilt with reinforced concrete foundations for durability, while the upper structure and railings were preserved in wood to maintain its traditional design.
The name “Thê Húc” (栖旭), given by Nguyễn Văn Siêu, carries a poetic meaning. It can be interpreted as “resting morning sunlight” or “the convergence of radiant light.”

3. Architecture of The Huc Bridge
The bridge faces east, toward the rising sun, symbolizing the reception of vital and positive energy. The entire structure is painted in a vibrant vermilion red. In Eastern culture, red represents life, happiness, luck, and joy. This striking red color, combined with the green water of Hoan Kiem Lake and the surrounding greenery, creates a visually stunning landscape.
The Huc Bridge is made of wood and designed in a gracefully curved shape resembling a shrimp. It has 15 spans supported by 32 round wooden pillars. This curved design not only gives the bridge a softer, more elegant appearance but also creates a calm and leisurely walking experience for visitors crossing it.
