1. History of Hanoi’s Pen Tower

To fully appreciate the significance of the Pen Tower, we must return to the mid-19th century. The monument was constructed in 1865, during the 18th year of Emperor Tự Đức’s reign, under the direction of the renowned scholar Nguyễn Văn Siêu – a distinguished cultural figure and respected mandarin affectionately known as “Thần Siêu” (The Divine Scholar).

As part of a comprehensive restoration of the Ngoc Son Temple complex, Nguyễn Văn Siêu commissioned a symbolic architectural ensemble consisting of the Pen Tower, Ink Slab Pavilion (Đài Nghiên), and The Huc Bridge. The placement of the Pen Tower at the entrance to the temple was far from decorative; it served as a powerful statement honoring education, scholarship, and literary excellence during a period of significant social and political change.

2. Location

The Pen Tower is located on Dinh Tien Hoang Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, right beside Hoan Kiem Lake and close to The Huc Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple.

3. What makes the architecture of the Pen Tower special?

Standing approximately 9 meters tall, the Pen Tower consists of five tiers and is constructed entirely from green stone blocks. It rises from a carefully arranged rock mound resembling a miniature mountain. As the tower ascends, each level gradually narrows. At its summit stands an inverted writing brush, with its tip pointing directly toward the sky.

Carved prominently into the tower are three Chinese characters: 寫青天 (Xiě Qīng Tiān), which can be translated as “Writing on the Blue Sky.”

These words symbolize integrity, noble aspirations, and the freedom of thought cherished by scholars of earlier generations. They embody the belief that knowledge and virtue should reach beyond earthly boundaries.

At the foot of The Huc Bridge stands the stone Ink Slab Pavilion, which traditionally represents the inkstone used in classical calligraphy. According to local tradition, on sunny days when the sun reaches its highest point, the shadow of the Pen Tower falls precisely into the center of the Ink Slab. This remarkable alignment demonstrates the ingenuity and symbolic vision of its designers.

The remarkable harmony with the Ink Slab Pavilion

It is no coincidence that the Pen Tower stands at the entrance to Ngoc Son Temple, where Tran Quoc Tuan (Hung Dao Dai Vuong), the national military hero, and Van Xuong De Quan, the patron deity of literature and examinations, are worshipped.

A symbol of the love of learning: For the people of Hanoi and students across Vietnam, the Pen Tower represents the power of knowledge, education, and academic achievement.
A spiritual sestination suring examination season: Each year, particularly before major graduation and university entrance examinations, thousands of students visit the site to seek good fortune and inspiration, hoping the sacred pen will illuminate their educational journey and bring success in their studies.
A cultural axis of Thang Long – Hanoi: Together with Khue Van Cac at the Temple of Literature, the Pen Tower forms one of the two most significant symbols of Vietnam’s long-standing educational tradition, scholarly achievement, and cultural heritage.
